PSD & Automatic Binding
PSD Import Settings and Orientation
Understand visible-only, auto-assembly, bone binding, animation generation, and their combinations.
After this article
Choose settings for assets only, assembly only, a skeleton without animation, or a complete animated character.
Before you start
- Read “Sample PSD Layers and Naming Rules”.
Choose the character's actual orientation
| Option | Appropriate artwork | Default animation generation |
|---|---|---|
| Front | Character faces the viewer | Not generated; a humanoid skeleton and IK can still be created |
| Back | Character faces away from the viewer | Not generated; a humanoid skeleton and IK can still be created |
| Right | Character faces canvas-right | Available when assembly and bone binding are enabled |
- 1
Look at the artwork, not the file name
The sample faces canvas-right, so select Right. For your own artwork, choose the orientation you actually see rather than guessing from the file name.
- 2
Compare the switch behavior
Front and Back disable and clear “Generate 7 animations”. Returning to Right restores your previous selection.
Expected resultThe interface and import logic apply the same orientation limitation.
Front and Back do not generate default animations in this version.
What the four switches control
| Switch | Controls | Does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Visible layers only | Whether hidden layers are imported as image resources | Hidden layers will be assembled |
| Auto-assemble PSD | Whether visible parts are assembled at their PSD positions | A complete humanoid skeleton is guaranteed |
| Auto-bind bones | Whether humanoid names create bones, slots, image bindings, and limb IK | Only moving image positions |
| Generate 7 animations | Whether default animations are installed on a right-facing humanoid rig | Every orientation and every PSD can produce animations |
- 1
Open the settings dialog
In Skeleton mode, choose Import → Import PSD File. Decide whether to append to an open project. By default only Visible layers only and Auto-assemble PSD are enabled; bones and animations are not generated automatically.
Auto-bind bones and animation generation are off by default; enable them for the quick start. - 2
Check switch dependencies
Turning off assembly disables bone binding and animation generation; turning off bone binding also disables animation generation.
Expected resultThe disabled states match the resulting feature combination.
Turn off assembly when you only need image assets.
Common setting combinations and results
| Goal | Settings | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Import slices only | Assembly off | Images enter the resource panel without a visible character structure |
| Assemble positions without a humanoid rig | Assembly on; bone binding off | Visible slices bind to slots under root, without limb IK or default animations |
| Create a rig without animations | Assembly and bone binding on; animation generation off | Creates the bone chain, slot bindings, and usable limb IK |
| Complete a right-facing character quickly | Right; assembly, bone binding, and animation generation on | Complete bindings, limb IK, and seven default animations |
| Create a front- or back-facing rig | Actual orientation; assembly and bone binding on | Orientation-specific skeleton and IK, without default animations |
