Use a real reimport to find missing files, version mismatches, and feature degradation.

Before you start

  • Complete a Spine JSON or SKEL export.
01

Prepare the complete data folder and a blank project

  1. 1

    Keep the exported set together

For 4.2, keep JSON or SKEL, ATLAS, and PNG in their original relative directories. Extract a 3.8 ZIP first. Do not select only the data file and forget the textures.

Expected resultThe folder contains data, atlas, and texture files together.

  2. 2

    Reimport into a blank project

Import appends to the current project. Use a blank project to evaluate the exported result without mixing in the original skeleton, resources, and animations.

Expected resultThe result comes only from the downloaded files.

  3. 3

    Choose Spine data import

In Skeleton mode, choose Import → Import Spine Data in Chrome or Edge so the browser can read the folder.

Expected resultThe version, format, and data-folder dialog opens.

Reimport reads the complete folder rather than a single JSON upload.
02

Choose version, format, and folder

  1. 1

Match the exported version and format

Select the actual 4.2 or 3.8 and JSON or SKEL format. If the file contains a different version, the editor parses the detected version and warns about the mismatch.

Expected resultThe selection matches the data and any mismatch produces a clear warning.

  2. 2

    Select the data folder

Click Choose Folder and allow the browser to read the directory containing .atlas, .json or .skel, and .png files.

Expected resultThe dialog summarizes the detected atlas, matching data file, and image counts.

Click Choose Folder, authorize access to the complete directory, then inspect the atlas, data-file, and image counts.
  3. 3

    Import and wait

Click Import and wait for official-runtime parsing and editor-model conversion. Record warnings and console information instead of checking only a success message.

Expected resultThe completion notice reports bone, slot, image, and animation counts.

Inspect the file contents before reimporting. File preview is not proof of a successful reimport; verify the resulting counts, canvas, and animations separately.

Compare against the source project

CheckCompare
Skeleton and slotsBone counts, parent–child relationships, slot bindings, and draw order
Images and atlasWhether every image displays, texture paths are correct, and transparent edges look normal
Meshes and weightsVertices, weights, bind pose, and deform animation for the target version
AnimationsAnimation count, frame ranges, FPS, keys, curves, and events
ConstraintsWhether IK, path, transform, and physics are supported or produce degradation warnings
Actual playbackWhether idle, walk, attack, death, and other key actions match the source
